Civil Engineering Degrees

Civil Engineering Degrees

What is the Main Focus of a Civil Engineer?

"Civil engineering is the oldest and most diverse branch of engineering. In its broadest sense, the civil engineer adapts the physical features of the earth to the needs of society. According to the University of Florida, approximately one out of four engineers is engaged in civil engineering."
Civil engineers design, construct, maintain, and operate infrastructures, while simultaneously safeguarding the public and environmental health and upgrading neglected structures and systems. Civil engineering reaches from the natural environment to the constructed environment, focusing on interactions between the two, with an emphasis on sustainability.
Combining atmospheric and energy sciences, civil-engineers study climate, air pollution, and weather, addressing problems that might be solved through renewable energy systems. They examine the availability of renewable resources (wind, hydropower and solar), and best practices for their combinations. These kinds of research brought about the first data-based wind map and examine the effects of alternative fuels on air pollution..

What Types of Degrees in Civil Engineering Are There?

Universities specializing in engineering fields offer master of science, master of engineering, and doctor of philosophy degrees in civil engineering as well as other branches of engineering technology.
A well-rounded civil engineering program prepares students for careers in civil engineering or for advanced study in the field.
Civil Engineering Schools

What Are the Prerequisites for a B.S.?

Schools of engineering can vary, but as a rule, their requirements are similar. Universities of engineering typically offer the CEE (civil and environmental engineering) degree, and a B.S. in environmental engineering (BS EnvE). The curriculum gives students the fundamentals to address emerging issues regarding air and land resources, human health, water, and environmental restoration.
During the first 2 years, studies include English composition, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and introductory engineering. Advanced engineering courses in the third year including solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and laboratories in engineering materials, hydraulic engineering, and environmental monitoring and process engineering.
Student electives are the central focus of fourth-year studies.
All prerequisites must be met before receiving a B.S. Acceptable letter grades in math, physics, chemistry, and COE are required for the B.S. EnvE degree.

What Kinds of Classes Do I Take, and How Long Does it Take to Earn a Degree in Civil Engineering?

A typical curriculum for a B.S. in engineering covers a 4-year study agenda. Students who attend school full-time and are successful in their classes can expect to graduate in 4 years. Below you will find a sample of the curriculum from UC Berkley.

What Are Some of the Jobs for Civil Engineers?

Civil Engineering recruiters focus on six basic infrastructure systems. The structural engineer focuses on the design and analysis of buildings and bridges. The geotechnical engineer designs and builds tunnels, pipelines, embankments, and foundations. The environmental engineer analyzes and solves problems involving air and water quality and management of waste and hazardous materials.
Water resources engineers seek ways to improve water sources through hydrology, meteorology, and fluid dynamics. Construction engineers manage projects for erecting buildings, digging tunnels, and laying roads. Transportation engineers design, construct and maintain highways, railways, airfields, and ports.
Graduates work for nongovernmental organizations, private companies, government agencies, public or private institutions, national research laboratories, or educational institutions. As for research, while masters-degree graduates can be involved through projects or assignments, it is primarily only those at the Ph.D. level who perform research in this field.

Automotive Engineering Degrees

Automotive Engineering Degrees

Automotive engineering is a branch of mechanical engineering that concerns the design, development and manufacture of cars, trucks, motorcycles and other motor vehicles. Automotive engineers also design and test the many subsystems or components that comprise a motorized vehicle.
Very few universities offer a bachelor's degree in automotive engineering. Consequently, many prospective automotive engineers earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from a university that also offers specialized courses in automotive engineering. However, there are plenty of universities offer master's degrees in automotive engineering.

Bachelor’s Degree

Because not many schools offer a bachelor’s degree program in automotive engineering, most aspiring automotive students enter a mechanical engineering program. This is because automotive engineering is an offshoot of mechanical engineering and therefore, many of the classes are the same. However, some schools offer mechanical engineering programs that include automotive engineering courses such as:
  • Automobile dynamics
  • Automotive electronics
  • Engine parts
  • Diesel engine theory
  • Alternative energy sources
  • Fuel cell systems
  • Powertrain dynamics
It usually takes four years to complete a bachelor's degree in engineering. During the last year, the student must finish a design project, either alone or with other students. After graduation, the new engineer must work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer for a certain number of years, depending on the state, and pass and Engineer-In-Training exam and Professional Engineers exam to become a licensed professional engineer.

Master’s Degree

A master's degree in automotive engineering is not necessary to work in the field, but such a degree will give students specialized automotive engineering knowledge and skills. Moreover, master's degree programs offer research opportunities for students. It takes about two years to complete a master's degree program in automotive engineering.
Studies include:
  • Design and manufacturing
  • Energy and environment
  • Materials
  • Noise and vibration
  • Powertrain
  • Dynamics and control
  • Electronics and computer software
  • Ergonomics
To earn a master's degree, the student must satisfy the university's thesis requirements and/or complete a final project.

Online Degree

The few universities that offer online automotive engineering degrees do so only at the master’s degree level. The student gains only theoretical knowledge from an online master's degree. The student does not receive any hands-on experience, which can be important to landing a job in automotive engineering. The online programs assume that the student received hands-on experience while obtaining the bachelor's degree. Therefore, online master's degree programs in automotive engineering are meant for the working automotive engineer.

Average Automotive Engineering Salary

In 2020, automotive engineer jobs employees earned an average income of $117,600 in 2011. This was a 10 percent increase from the 2019 median salaries of $107,000, according to SAE International.

Highest-Paid On-Demand Engineers Jobs

Highest-Paid on-demand Engineers Jobs

Most demand?
As far as the demand is concerned obviously Software developers (who actually develop in product-based companies)are high in demand followed by software testers.
A recent survey by Stack Overflow suggested those who can program in JavaScript are the highest in demand followed by App developers like iOS and Android.
As the technology changes demand software developers shifts so none of these may be valid in the long term.
Most Salaries?
Again developers are highest paid engineers, but who can actually help in building stuff. For this, learning languages might be of little to no use unless and until you are well versed with Algorithms and data structures and can program well.
Again what I read on stack Overflow
There are just 3% of total programmers who can program in R and Go so definitely they would be having the higher pay scale but as I said it all comes down to your familiarity with Algorithms and data structures because languages can be learned in less than six weeks.
Actually, if you are good enough you will be valued and paid accordingly in the tech industry no matter which field or type you are. Period

The in-demand types of engineers and salaries are those that:
  1. Have good enough communication skills to extract a customer's problem, articulate it, and explain a solution or better yet the advantages of their solution.
  2. Can inspire/motivate other software engineers to work on that solution.
  3. know enough about programming and architecture to make sure their solution is doable and make sure no one is taking advantage of you and maybe make the prototype or minimal viable product.
You will normally find their engineers as lead developers, product owners, to all the way up to CTOs and business owners. The more value you generate (cost of the problem you are solving x the number of people that have that problem) the more you can get paid.

How do mechanical engineers get a job abroad

The way to find a job outside is to apply for it either through the job portals or through by applying directly on the company websites. Companies that are open to hiring foreigners will get in touch with you and interview your skills. Once you are shortlisted, the company usually arranges for all the paper works that is required to transfer there.
Otherwise, if you are looking for different types of engineering jobs, then you can join any of the foreign colleges, study there and participate in the placements drive. The international center for applied sciences (ICAS), is a program from where various students have transferred online to get an engineering degree from a foreign college and also got placed there. There are quite some examples of that. There’s one blog on a girl that I read recently on their website on a girl who did her mechanical engineering through this program and transferred to a foreign college to complete here mechanical engineering.
The implementation of mechanical engineering is broadening day by day and I also read about another blog that talked about the use of mechanical engineering in the cell-repair.

It depends on various factors:
  • If you are from IIT or NIT, your chances of being placed abroad are very high. In short the University or college from where you have your B.tech matters to an extent.
  • Having contacts with people who work abroad. A really long shot and really depends on luck. The wait for replies is time-consuming and might also ruin confidence at times. One thing you can do is work here while trying abroad, needs constant planning and much effort to be put.
  • If you have experience of at least 2 yrs in the field you intend to pursue. Trust me, the salary would be low at the start but the struggle is worth it and eventually pays off well.
  • Do Master's in the country you wish to work in, a long shot but an effective one. Most tend to prefer this route.
  • Do Masters after gaining experience in the field you want to work. A further time-consuming process, but increases your chances of getting placed after studies.
